We think that the best way to prepare for next year is to take an honest look at what you've learned and accomplished this year. That isn't always easy in that it involves reviewing what you've done with a critical eye towards how you can improve.
The IT/telecom managers who do this, however, they tell us it's well worth the effort. They feel more prepared to tackle the issues on the horizon because they have evaluated what worked and what didn't work this past year as well as their strengths and weaknesses and what they need to do to optimize the talents of their teams.
With that in mind, here are a few key touchpoints to consider as you take stock of this year. You can probably add to this list:
Digital transformation. How well have you followed your IT roadmap? Where has your existing infrastructure served you well? Where is it lacking? Are you on track with your needs?
Security. This is one area that can quickly get away from the best of IT managers. How well protected was your network this year? Where are you still vulnerable?
Re-evaluating the “tools of the trade”.Lots of new stuff out there, but the trick is figuring out which of it is a must have and which is just fun stuff everybody wants, but nobody wants to pay for. Time to do an ROI on all your assets. You might find some surprises in there.
Financials.Do you have a nagging feeling that you overspent in 2021 on things you didn’t need or never used? What shape are your contracts in? Are they optimized for you? Or for your vendors? One way to find out is to make sure a professional audit is on your list for 2022.
Your team. The end of the year is a great time to evaluate your own staff. Do they need more training? More education? Are you looking to hire in 2022? What kind of skillset do you need?
Now is the time to set aside a day or two to take stock of the year that was. Invite your team to contribute their own "lessons learned" and offer thoughts as to how not to make the same mistakes again.
