Is Your Data Still Locked in Silos?

Why you need to unlock it now …

How long have we been talking about data locked in silos? For at least a few decades, probably more. Yet the problem persists, perhaps even more compelling today as there is more data unlocked and available for use than ever before. But the valuable potential of that data goes untapped by companies who continue to put off the process of integrating their data sources.

Here are just some of the issues caused by data sitting in silos:

Poor data quality.

Data silos often result in conflicting data from source to source, resulting in what can be significant discrepancies between data elements. This erodes data quality often to the point of becoming unusable.

Productivity.

When valuable employees spend hours manually entering data and searching different databases for information it detracts from the work they should be doing. Furthermore, each silo must be maintained. That tedious work not only impacts productivity but causes frustration for the team.

Security issues.

Multiple silos of data mean multiple points of entry for hackers. Each data bank must be secured independently, which can be challenging with the lack of central visibility over each silo.

Implementation of new applications.

Nowhere is this more evident than with the growing adoption of generative AI. AI simply does not work well with siloed data. AI relies upon data to combine it with other data and produce intelligent results. If data is locked in silos, it presents AI with an incomplete data set to work with, greatly hindering the value of the data.

Could AI be the catalyst of change?

As the benefits of generative AI take shape in the form of usable apps, more companies are getting serious about tackling their data silo issues. Those who have held off integrating data sources are now getting on board due to the pressure from both inside and outside their companies to take advantage of AI.

For those companies who attempt to modernize without integrating their data flows, however, ongoing issues will not only persist, but increase, widening the gap between what they can and can’t do with their data. If the desire to harness and use AI to be more competitive and optimize productivity motivates companies to take action, that’s a good thing. The time has come to knock down the silo walls and realize the benefits that fully integrated systems deliver.
