That's a lot to sort through, especially for busy IT managers who are, at any given time, juggling an array of projects while putting out fires. It is, however, an important exercise to stay on track or get back on track if issues and other concerns have made meeting goals more challenging.
Here are some areas to examine when conducting your own Q1 assessment:
Leadership How effective have you been as the leader of your team? Are there ways you could be more communicative and encouraging to your employees? Are they empowered to take actions to keep end users supported? One way to find out is to schedule a team meeting to review Q1 progress and get their input. Listening is one of the key attributes of a good leader. Make sure you are doing that and that you are prepared to follow through on promises.
Goals What obstacles are coming up regularly that keep you from meeting key goals? Is it a staffing issue? A process or workflow issue? What actions can you take to re-set and get back on track? Who should be involved?
Vendor performance Your vendors should be true partners, working alongside your team to achieve your goals. Are they helping you to address issues and think outside the box to keep your organization operating effectively? It may be time to consider making changes.
Finances This is the time of year when many IT managers realize they may not have the funds to undertake some of their more ambitious projects. Finding money isn’t easy. However, using a technology expense management (TEM) solution can help you to get better control over your IT/telecom expenses. Another great way to find areas for cost savings is to conduct a full audit.
Technology What’s on your horizon? Are you on track to deliver it or have your plans slipped? This is the time to adjust expectations if necessary to get on track. Don’t fall into the trap of attempting to implement new, ambitious projects while your day-to-day operations are struggling. It will only add to your challenges.
Processes and applications Which systems are you managing in house? Would it make sense to consider SaaS, outsourcing some of your applications and processes? Taking some of the burden off your team could free up significant time and resources to help you get on track with your goals. And it can help your team to get out from more tedious, time consuming tasks to play a more strategic role in your department.
