Are You (Still) Transitioning to the Cloud? 5 Tips to Get it Done!

We speak regularly with IT and telecom managers who tell us they have too much on their plates and too little time. There is so much they want (and need) to do but putting out fires and taking care of day-to-day challenges always seems to get in the way.

One area, often a sore subject, is transitioning to the cloud. Or, in many cases, completing the transition to the cloud. How many years have we been talking about this? Five? Ten? More?

One of the biggest reasons for the delays is that moving over to the cloud is not always that easy. And, once you think you've made the transition, all kinds of issues pop up and suddenly you're spending a lot of time that you don't have fixing them.

Here are a few tips to get back at it and get the job done:

  1. Define the goal The best place to start is with senior management. They not only are the ones who make the final decisions, they hold the purse strings. A goal shaped by leadership will carry more weight and keep the initiative moving.

  2. Articulate the value … to everyone. The more aware employees and clients are of your transition the more prepared they will be to make it with you.

  3. Plan, plan, plan. Take the time to plot out exactly what each phase of the migration will look like. Start with a single user scenario and navigate through any issues before expanding.

  4. Don’t assume. Migration to the cloud is not simply a technology move. It is a move that impacts every corner of your organization. Assuming it’s just another piece of technology to be deployed is a mistake that can cost you buy-in, user confidence and maybe even an employee or two.

  5. Train everyone. This goes without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many IT departments cut over and assume everyone knows how it all works. They don’t. Taking that extra step will benefit everyone, especially your own team.

Even if you are already partially using the cloud, taking the extra time to revisit the above 5 tips can help you avoid pitfalls as you transition other parts of your business and help untangle any issues that may have already arisen.

Don't forget to call upon your partners to lend a hand.
